Walk with the Wise: How the Company You Keep Shapes Your Life
The phrase “walk with the wise” has been on my heart and mind a lot lately. Recently, I woke up with Proverbs 13:20 repeating in my head:
“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
Have you ever found yourself in the wrong company and suffered because of it? Many of us have. Sometimes, we don’t realize we’re walking with fools until it’s too late. Other times, we choose to stay in toxic relationships out of fear, comfort, or obligation. But the truth is, the people we surround ourselves with directly impact our lives, choices, and growth.
The Dangers of Walking with the Unwise
If we consistently keep company with unwise or toxic individuals, we risk:
Poor decision-making – Adopting reckless behaviors or impulsive choices.
Negative influence – Being encouraged toward harmful habits or mindsets.
Missed opportunities – Losing out on growth, wisdom, and meaningful goals.
Increased harm – Emotionally, financially, or even physically.
Erosion of values – Gradually compromising our morals and principles.
As Proverbs 13:20 warns, the consequences of walking with fools are real. But how do we break free from toxic relationships? How do we find the courage to walk away and seek wisdom instead?
How to Walk with the Wise and Break Free from Toxicity
Seek Accountability – Find a wise, trustworthy person who is not in the same toxic circles.
Limit or Cut Off Communication – Give yourself space to heal without guilt.
Pray for Discernment – Jesus often withdrew to seek God’s wisdom; we should too.
Trust Your Gut Feelings – God gave us intuition for a reason—don’t ignore it.
Grieve and Heal – Ending relationships, even toxic ones, can be painful. Allow yourself time to process.
Your Growth Depends on Who You Walk With
If you want to be wise, you must walk with the wise. Personal growth happens when we surround ourselves with people who challenge us, inspire us, and help us grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally.
Take inventory of your relationships today. Are they making you wiser—or are they leading you toward harm?
“You can’t change the people around you, but you can change the people around you.”
By choosing wisdom over toxicity, you can transform every area of your life.
